Tucked away in the heart of North Yorkshire, Malton is more than just a charming market town—it’s a treasure trove for food lovers, independent shops, and anyone who enjoys a good wander. Whether you're staying with us at Bugthorpe Grange Glamping or just passing through, Malton is a must-visit destination that offers something special in every season.
A Foodie’s Paradise
Malton has rightly earned its title as Yorkshire’s Food Capital. The town buzzes with energy during its much-loved Food Lovers Festival, held every year on the late May bank holiday weekend. Picture bustling stalls, live cookery demos, street food from around the world, artisan producers, and local chefs showcasing the best of Yorkshire's larder. It’s the perfect day out for grazing, discovering new flavours, and picking up foodie goodies.
If you're not around for the big weekend, fear not—Malton keeps the food celebration going all year. On the second Saturday of every month, the Malton Monthly Food Market takes over the town square. Expect stalls packed with local produce: cheeses, meats, bakes, oils, chutneys, wines, and more. There’s usually live music, plenty of free samples, and a welcoming, community feel.
Shop Small, Shop Local
Beyond food, Malton is a haven for independent boutiques and specialist shops. It’s easy to spend a few hours here, strolling the cobbled streets and browsing everything from homewares to handmade gifts.
Talbot Yard Food Court is a hidden gem where you'll find a handful of artisan producers—including a coffee roastery, gelateria, bakery, and distillery—all housed in a beautifully restored coaching yard.
For stylish fashion and gifts check out Rusty Fox or Hare and Wild, bookworms should pop into Kemps General Store & Bookshop and for your Yorkshire postcards you’ll want to pop into Hopper’s!
Where to Eat
All that shopping and exploring will work up an appetite, and Malton has no shortage of great spots to refuel.
Pizza on the Square is perfect for a laid-back meal. Their wood-fired pizzas are made fresh to order and can be enjoyed in the town square or taken away to enjoy back at your pod.
For something a little more indulgent, The Pantry offers everything from breakfast and brunch to homemade cakes and daily specials in a warm, rustic setting.
And for a more elevated dining experience, try FourtySix, a stylish, modern bistro with seasonal menus, small plates, highlighting the best of local produce.
Where Our Hampers Begin
You’ll also spot one of our favourite bakeries in the heart of town – Thomas the Baker. This bakery is where we source our fresh bread and traditional Yorkshire tea cakes for the complimentary hampers we provide at Bugthorpe Grange Glamping. Their loaves are baked daily, and their sweet treats are hard to resist—don’t leave without trying a Yorkshire curd tart!
Beyond the High Street
Malton is also home to a charming cinema, The Palace, which offers a cosy and classic movie experience.
If you have time, take a walk along the River Derwent, or visit the nearby Scampston Walled Garden—a beautifully restored garden that’s perfect for a peaceful afternoon stroll.
Whether you're sampling street food at the market, hunting for gifts in the boutiques, or picking up a few pastries for your morning coffee, Malton is full of heart, flavour, and personality. It’s the perfect day trip from Bugthorpe Grange and always worth exploring.
We love it so much, we bring a little piece of Malton to you through our welcome hampers. But nothing beats experiencing the town for yourself!
