One of the lovely things about staying in the countryside is that you get the best of both worlds. Here at Bugthorpe Grange Glamping you’re surrounded by peaceful rolling farmland and the gentle hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, yet the beautiful Yorkshire coastline is still within easy reach for a day trip.
In under an hour you can swap quiet country lanes for sea air, sandy beaches and dramatic coastal views. Whether you’re looking for a traditional seaside stroll, a scenic clifftop walk or somewhere peaceful to watch the waves, the Yorkshire coast has plenty to offer.
Here are a few of our favourite beaches to explore during a stay.
Hunmanby Beach
Just south of Filey, Hunmanby Gap Beach is a fantastic spot if you’re looking for a quieter stretch of sand. Tucked beneath the cliffs, it has a relaxed and slightly hidden feel compared to some of the larger seaside towns nearby.
There’s a convenient car park and a café at the top of the cliff, and a path that leads down to the beach itself. Once you reach the sand, you’ll often find plenty of space to spread out, even on a warm summer day.
Hunmanby Gap is ideal for long walks along the shoreline, beach picnics or simply sitting and watching the waves roll in. If you walk far enough, you’ll eventually reach the larger bay at Filey.
Filey Beach
Filey Beach is one of the most traditional seaside beaches in Yorkshire. With miles of golden sand and a wide open bay, it’s perfect for families, paddling in the sea or building sandcastles.
What makes Filey special is its relaxed atmosphere. It’s a proper seaside town without the hustle and bustle you sometimes find in larger resorts. A stroll along the promenade followed by fish and chips or an ice cream is always a good idea.
At the northern end of the bay you’ll also find Filey Brigg, a long rocky outcrop stretching into the sea that’s popular with walkers, birdwatchers and photographers.
Flamborough Head
If you’re looking for dramatic coastal scenery, a trip to Flamborough Head is well worth the drive.
This striking stretch of coastline is known for its towering white cliffs, hidden coves and incredible sea views. It’s also one of the best places in Yorkshire for spotting seabirds, with thousands nesting along the cliffs during the warmer months.
The two historic lighthouses here are landmarks in their own right, and the coastal paths offer some of the most scenic walks in the region. Just around the corner you’ll also find North Landing, a beautiful sheltered bay that feels almost untouched.
It’s a wonderful place for photography, coastal walks or simply taking in the fresh sea air.
Fraisthorpe Beach
If wide open spaces and peaceful surroundings are what you’re after, Fraisthorpe Beach is a fantastic choice.
This long sandy beach stretches for miles and is far less developed than many traditional seaside resorts. That means you’ll often find plenty of room to walk, relax or enjoy the sea views without crowds.
It’s also a popular spot for dog walkers and beachgoers who enjoy a quieter coastal experience. The nearby café is a great place to grab a drink or something to eat after a stroll along the sand.
On a clear day, the views along the coastline are beautiful, and the sunsets here can be particularly spectacular.
The Perfect Day Trip from the Wolds
One of the things our guests often enjoy most is combining countryside relaxation with a seaside adventure. You can spend the morning exploring the peaceful lanes and footpaths around Bugthorpe, then head over to the coast for an afternoon by the sea.
After a day of salty sea air, sandy walks and coastal views, returning to the calm countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds feels even more special.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend break or a longer stay, the Yorkshire coast offers some wonderful places to explore — all within easy reach of Bugthorpe Grange Glamping.
